Scottsdale has some of the widest range of homes in the Valley. South Scottsdale has 1950s–60s block and slump-block ranches, popular for mid-century updates. McCormick Ranch and Gainey have 1970s–90s homes. North Scottsdale has large custom and semi-custom homes, often with flat roofs, parapets and big glass walls.
Permits and review
Scottsdale issues permits through its Planning & Development Services One Stop Shop. In much of north Scottsdale, the Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) ordinance limits grading, building envelopes and natural-area disturbance. That matters for additions, casitas and hardscape. Check lot restrictions before you design.
